4.5. Analyst View and Price Targets
Lesson objective
Use external opinions with caution.
Analyst View summarizes published ratings and targets. This is third-party information that can change, become outdated, or reflect different assumptions.
A target is not confirmed intrinsic value and does not guarantee a return. The difference between the current price and a target should not be described as expected profit without context.
Use analyst information to understand market expectations and identify disagreements, not to delegate the decision.
Analyst targets are estimates, not destinations
An analyst price target is normally the output of assumptions about future revenue, margins, cash flows, valuation multiples, and risk. It is not a promise that the market price will travel there.
A simple way to express the gap is:
Implied upside/downside = (Target price − Current price) ÷ Current price × 100
Calculating implied upside
If a stock trades at $80 and an analyst target is $100, the implied upside is ($100 − $80) ÷ $80 = 25%. That 25% is conditional on the analyst's assumptions; it is not a 25% expected return guaranteed to occur.
Read the distribution, not only the average
| Signal | What it can tell you | |---|---| | Mean / median target | Central tendency of published estimates | | High and low targets | Range of analyst assumptions | | Number of analysts | How broad the sample is | | Revisions | Whether expectations are moving up or down | | Dates | Whether targets reflect recent information |
A wide range of targets is itself information: analysts may disagree strongly about growth, margins, terminal valuation, or risk.
Reverse the question
Instead of asking, “Will the stock reach the target?”, ask: “What has to become true for this target to make sense?” Then compare those assumptions with the company's actual financial trajectory.
What you should remember
- Check the date and the dispersion of estimates.
- Ask which assumptions support the target.
Practice
Compare the low, mean, median, and high targets. Explain what the spread may indicate.
