1.15. First Guided Practice in Finzati

Lesson objective

Apply the basic process without making a recommendation.

Search for Microsoft using MSFT. Confirm that the page represents Microsoft Corporation and review its industry, price, market capitalization, 52-week range, and beta.

Read the most recent financial event. In the example reviewed, Finzati showed higher revenue and net income, lower debt, and weaker free cash flow. The lesson is not to label the report automatically as positive or negative, but to recognize that one report can contain mixed signals.

Continue to Company Snapshot and Investment DNA. Record which areas appear strongest and which area has the lower score. Then read the company description and summarize how Microsoft generates revenue.

Guided workflow: from ticker to research question

  1. Identify — company, ticker, exchange, business.
  2. Observe — latest event and recent changes.
  3. Measure — revenue, margins, earnings, cash flow, cash, debt.
  4. Compare — peers and valuation.
  5. Verify — 10-K / 10-Q and primary sources.
  6. Write — thesis, uncertainty, next item to monitor.

A useful conclusion

“Revenue is growing and margins are stable, but FCF weakened while CapEx increased. I need to decide whether the spending is temporary expansion or a structural requirement before drawing a conclusion.”

Success is not forcing a Buy/Sell answer. Success is ending with a clearer business understanding and better-defined unanswered questions.

In Finzati

Finzati organizes data and provides an initial reading. Verify important figures in financial statements and official filings.

What you should remember

  • An aggregate signal does not replace the underlying metrics.
  • Recent results and current valuation are separate questions.

Practice

Write one paragraph titled “What I understand about Microsoft” and another titled “What I still need to research.”
